Radio Faux Show Volume 3, Number 24: First of October

This Week’s Theme: First of October

The First of October is an annual Faux Show theme. To be clear, this is not a show released on October 1 but is a show inspired by the group First of October. The basic concept is to focus the show on music and artists that express joy and humor. In the words of Crash Davis in Bull Durham, it’s fun goddammit.

The 2021 version and 2022 version of this series were created in the old Faux Show format and are filled with dozens of fun songs and videos by both First of October and other artists who understand that music can be fun. They also provide the background of the band and their overall concept.

This year’s installment is simpler. I’ve created a playlist of some fun music, including selections from the brand new First of October album (and their other albums), and provided links to the now five and growing collection of documentaries that shows the band in action.

It’s been a couple of years since First of October put together a solid set of ten songs in this crazy endeavor they undertake each year. I’m not sure what magic happened in 2023, but their fifth album is my favorite so far. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios using some of the original Beatles instruments and they succeeded wonderfully in combining their normal songwriting with a variety of Beatles influences. This is their most beautiful record, although there is still plenty of silliness and one more (can this be the last one please?) Halloween-themed song. It is only 19 minutes long, but feels like the most complete album they’ve created yet.

The rest of this year’s Faux Shows will focus on a bunch of Best of the Year lists and, as usual for this time of year, a bunch of holiday-themed shows. As always, thanks for listening, and reading!
