Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band: Giggin’ Down
Since the very first post, one of the core values of the Radio Faux Show is that everyone should listen to a chunk of funk every day. In that spirit, I occasionally go out searching for old funk that I don’t know. The sweet spot for funk is from 1968 to 1975, and I just discovered a band who thrived during that period. The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band went through multiple lineup changes during their brief existence, mostly due to the fact that they were composed of session musicians. In the end, the group landed on a lineup that produced the majority of their material, including “Giggin’ Down.” The tune is on the group’s second album Together, but founder Charles Wright considers this 1969 release to be the group’s first true record. This is a stone-cold groove with a solid horn line, drums in the pocket, and a thumpin’ bass line.

Love love love this! The only other song by them that I’m familiar with is “Express Yourself,” which is also fantastic.

What is crazy is that I didn’t even know they were the band who wrote and recorded “Express Yourself” until you pointed it out! That is a stone cold groove!
