Guinga: Parsifal
I jumped into the discography of Brazilian guitarist/composer Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar (aka Guinga) after discovering yesterday’s song of the day. Guinga (a name taken from Escobar’s pronunciation of his nickname – Gringo – when he was a child) is a great example of how it is never too late to start a career in music. As a young man, he was a relatively well-known songwriter, but he also practiced as a dentist throughout his 30s and 40s. It wasn’t until he turned 40 in 1990 that he embarked on a career as a performing musician. His mastery of the guitar and songwriting in multiple Brazilian styles allowed him to quickly become a popular artist. He has released over twenty albums in the last 35 years, and most include other great vocalists and musicians of the era. “Parsifal” is from his wonderful 1999 release Suite Leopaldina and features vocals by Chico Buarque and Nei Lopes.
