Song of the Day: April 14, 2024

Sunday is jazz day. Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is now one of the oldest living jazz legends. He began his professional career 64 years ago and has recorded hundreds of sessions. He has done just about everything a jazz musician can do. He has recorded in all styles, including being an early proponent of the melding of jazz with other world music. He can shred like no one else, but he is also one of the most meditational players. Only Pharoah Sanders was more in tune with the breadth of sounds that a tenor sax can produce. He is still recording at age 86, and his latest release is titled The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow. The album includes Lloyd on sax along with an incredible rhythm section of Jason Moran on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Album opener “Defiant, Tender Warrior” is a gorgeous tune that kicks off 15 songs covering multiple styles, tempos, and textures.
