Louis Armstrong and The Mills Brothers: Boog-It
Sometimes you need to go back and appreciate the musicians who invented 20th century popular music. Louis Armstrong is one of the inventors of jazz. The Mills Brothers are one of the inventors of the vocal group sound. Although they worked in different styles, they both influenced jazz, rock and roll, doo-wop, R&B, and pop music from the 1920s through the 1950s. In 1954, they released an album together. The eight songs on that collection are all wonderful. It was standard for The Mills Brothers to only record with their four voices and a guitar. They vocalized other instruments and harmonized gloriously. For this record, they follow that style, but with Louis Armstrong adding trumpet and some lead vocals. “Boog-It” is a great early rock and roll styled tune.
