Last Dinner Party: On Your Side
Prelude to Ecstasy, the debut by female quintet The Last Dinner Party, is an early contender for album of the year on a lot of best of lists, including mine. To best start a discussion of this album, I think it is impossible to ignore the influence of past musicians such as Kate Bush, Sparks, and Roxy Music. The Last Dinner Party presents a wonderful blend of the original art-rock of those groups with the post-genre music of the 2020s. Throw in the theatrics of Queen and you can start to grasp the sound and style of this new band. “On Your Side” presents the group’s songwriting blueprint – a minimal intro, a slow build up toward the first earworm chorus, and a variety of sounds that move in and out of focus while the melodies soar above it all.
