Song of the Day: May 17, 2024

It’s funky Friday! Faux Fan West recently suggested that I select some singles for this 1974 series. Their suggestion was “Kung Fu Fighting,” although I believe tongue was set firmly in cheek for that comment. I love the idea, so I’ve gone with my favorite soul single of the year. “I Can’t Stand The Rain” was produced by the Hi Records label. This was the same label and group of session musicians who ruled soul music in the early ’70s through the recordings of Al Green. Peebles’ composition style was different than Green’s, but there is no mistaking the sound of the Hi Records production team on her recordings. This song was her only Top 40 hit and her highest charting R&B hit. It isn’t funk in the traditional sense, but nothing grooves like that Hi Records percussion sound.

And, here’s “Kung Fu Fighting” for FFW! Holy cow, this one hasn’t aged well for many reasons.
