Andrew Bird, Alan Hampton, & Ted Poor: Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise
Sunday is jazz day, and a wonderful new collection jazz standards has just been released by Andrew Bird. Indie-rock icon Bird provides vocals and violin, and is joined by Ted Poor on drums and Alan Hampton on bass, as well as occasional guitar from Jeff Parker and Larry Goldings. With Sunday Morning Put-On, Bird has brought his career full circle from his earliest recordings of swing jazz with Squirrel Nut Zippers and his band Bowl of Fire, but those early recordings fall flat when compared to his work over the last 25 years. Those decades of recording and touring have served him well, and only now could he produce an album as accomplished as Sunday Morning Put-On. These are modern interpretations of jazz standards, including some of the most popular standards of the genre, but all presented in the style that Bird has developed throughout his solo career. “Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise” is one of my favorite standards, but all of the tunes on this new record are great.

What a beautiful recording and mix — crystal clear, plenty of space, fantastic drum sounds, that live-off-the-floor feel . . . just fantastic.
