Song of the Day: May 30, 2024

Working through my Top 20 albums of 1974 kept me pretty busy, so now I’m going to ease up for a while and throw a variety of old and new music into the Song of the Day posts, with a focus on music I’ve never heard before. Tonnerre are from rural Quebec and Ottawa. La nuit sauvage is their debut album. While most hard rock and metal releases continue to move further into the aggressive, brutal, sonically destructive sounds of 21st century metal, Tonnerre revel in the riff-driven hard rock of AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, and similar 70s artists. This is guitar riff 101. All songs are sung in French by vocalist Annick. There is absolutely nothing new going on here, but it is great to hear music by a new band that sounds like the glory days of hard rock. Bon Scott and Malcolm Young are looking up in appreciation.

To learn more about Tonnerre, check out their Facebook page or read this interview from HeavyMusicHQ.
