Mogwai: Cody
I have reviewed a lot of albums over the last few years while writing this blog. Most of them have been part of my Year In Review series. This series has focused on albums celebrating their 50th, 25th, and 10th anniversaries. I recently completed a list of my Top 20 albums from 1974 (50th anniversary), and I’m now going to move forward 25 years to 1999. For this year, I’m going to cover my Top 10 albums along with some other albums that I think deserve attention. I’ll start with number 10, Come on Die Young by Mogwai. This was the second album for post-rock masters Mogwai, and was their breakout record. Employing extreme dynamic shifts, a juxtaposition of beauty and noise, and the slowly relentless building of tension into a sonic release created an album that is as good as post-rock gets. Most of the music of Mogwai is instrumental, but I’ve selected the song “Cody” as an example that shows the breadth of songwriting the band showcased on this record. Mogwai never made another album like this one, nor as good as this one. 25 years later, I don’t often listen to a lot of the post-rock albums I enjoyed back then, but this one remains in my regular rotation.
