Black Nasty: Getting Funky ‘Round Here
It’s funky Friday and today’s track is a lost gem. Taking a page from Sly Stone and George Clinton’s book, Detroit’s Black Nasty combined rock, funk, and soul to create one of the great lost funk albums of 1973. Talking to the People was the only album released by the group before they changed their name to Nazty and then The ADC Band. The album contains ten songs ranging from the smooth soul of “I Must Be In Love” to the John Lee Hooker influenced boogie of “Black Nasty Boogie” to the Parliament-influenced funk rock of the title track. The best funk song on the record is “Getting Funky ‘Round Here,” a solid piece of early ’70s funk rock. Bands like this had no chance to succeed in 1973 because they were too rock and roll for black radio and too soulful for FM and pop radio, but damn if these aren’t some stone cold grooves.
