Third Eye Blind: Never Let You Go
Continuing my list of the top 10 albums of 1999, coming in at number 7 is Blue by Third Eye Blind. The band exploded onto the scene in 1997 with their summertime smash hit “Semi-Charmed Life,” and I became a huge fan. They are still one of my favorite bands of the ’90s and I regularly listen to their albums. They never found the success of that first album again, but their second album is just as good. The thirteen tracks on Blue present a non-stop hook-fest. Following the same formula as on their debut, there are pop hits like “Never Let You Go,” emotional blasts of energy like “Deep Inside Of You” and “Wounded,” punchy rock anthems like “10 Days Late,” and several great tracks of filler like “1,000 Julys” and “The Red Summer Sun.” Bands like Third Eye Blind were a dime a dozen in 1999, and they were one of two (along with Everclear) for which I always purchased new music upon its release. 25 years later, their music never disappoints when I want a quick burst of late ’90s era power pop.
