Vitamin C (featuring Lady Saw): Smile
Continuing my focus on the music of 1999, my selection for best single of that year is “Smile” by Vitamin C with Lady Saw. The song was a Top 20 hit for Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick, aka Vitamin C, and was the first track and first single from her self-titled debut. The song and album have been lost to time for anyone who didn’t hear them 25 years ago but reviewing my favorites from the year quickly brought this release back to me. Fitzpatrick didn’t create anything new with her music but this release is about as happy as music got in 1999. Every song is upbeat dance. There are samples, rap features, and tons of joy. This album is one that Ms. Faux and I discovered at a listening station in our favorite CD store. We bought it, listened to it daily for months, and then shelved it for 25 years. Now it is back in my rotation as a perfect summer album. Fitzpatrick only released two albums before moving on to a career as an actress and music executive for Nickelodeon and Netflix, but luckily for anyone who wants to smile while listening to music (pun intended) she released an album of joyful music at the end of the last century.
