Song of the Day: July 13, 2024

Continuing my list of the Top 10 albums of 1999, coming in at #5 is Midnite Vultures by Beck. This was Beck’s seventh album and is sandwiched between three other Beck classics. It was not as popular as Odelay (his breakout release, Mutations (which won a Grammy), or Sea Change (which was one of the best albums of the early 2000s), but this has always been one of my favorites. His exploration of neo-funk oddness didn’t work for many of his older fans, but songs like “Sexx Laws,” “Peaches & Cream,” and the hit “Debra” are classic Beck cuts that he still performs live. One thing I’m noticing after the last few song of the day posts is that Ms. Faux and I listened to a lot of grooving music in 1999! This may not be my favorite Beck album (that would be Odelay), but it is a close second. After Sea Change in 2002, all Beck albums became a sonic mix of his previous works, with the sound of Midnite Vultures present throughout.
