Shabaka Hutchings with Floating Points and Laraaji: I’ll Do Whatever You Want
Sunday is jazz day. After several weeks of focus on the music of 1999, I’m going to spend some time focusing on new music from 2024, starting with the fantastic new album by British musician Shabaka Hutchings. Hutching was the leader and tenor saxophonist for the jazz band Sons of Kemet. That group disbanded in 2022 after ten years and four wonderful releases. Hutchings has now returned with his debut solo album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace. Since leaving Sons of Kemet, he has also stopped playing saxophone and moved to flute as his primary instrument. The album is also a change in style. While Sons of Kemet played a mix of jazz, rock, and African music, this album is a new age/jazz excursion into meditational music in the vein of Pharoah Sanders. The Sanders comparison is especially present on the tune “I’ll Do Whatever You Want,” a collaboration with producer Floating Points. Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders released my favorite album of 2021, which was also a collection of improvised meditational pieces. Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace is on my growing short list of favorite releases in 2024.
