Jimmy Carter and Dallas County Green: A Night Of Love
Thanks go to Faux, Jr. for recently introducing me to this lost album of songs by Jimmy Carter and Dallas County Green. Reissued by the amazing archival label Numero Group, this is a quality collection of recordings from 1977 that fit nicely into the style now known as cosmic American. This blend of ’60s country and psychedelia with a ’70s singer/songwriter style was influential on future artists we now call alt-country. For every well-known artist, such as Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Firefall, there were a hundred groups like Jimmy Carter and Dallas County Green. The main difference was not the quality of songs – it was access to distribution, management, and radio play. “A Night Of Love” would have fit perfectly on a Firefall album, “Honey Dew” channels Townes Van Zandt, and “Summer Brings the Sunshine” is a precursor to alt-country in the ’90s. Overall, this is a nice addition to the lost recordings of the ’70s cosmic American movement.
