Rachel Chinouriri: The Hills

British/Zimbabwean Indie-pop artist Rachel Chinouriri recently released her debut album. What a Devestating Turn of Events is a catchy collection of indie-rock/pop that combines a variety of modern styles. There are several standout tracks – album opener “Garden of Eden” verges on shoegaze, “Never Need Me” is catchy indie-rock, “All I Ever Asked” is downbeat pop, and “Robbed” is a gorgeous mid-tempo ballad. My favorite track is “The Hills,” a post-grunge power-pop tune that reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair. I’ve added this one to my growing short list of the best of 2024.
