The Chills: Tied Up On A Chain
I’ll follow up yesterday’s song by Ducks Ltd. with a song by The Chills. As I wrote yesterday, Ducks Ltd. remind me a lot of the The Chills, so it is a perfect time to pay homage to Chills frontman Martin Phillipps who died at age 61 on July 28, 2024. The Chills were the most successful and influential band on New Zealand’s Flying Nun records in the ’80s. Their reimagining of the music of bands like The Byrds resulted in the invention of jangle pop at the same time R.E.M. was doing so on the other side of the globe. If you are not familiar with The Chills or their NZ contemporaries, and you like the music of bands like early R.E.M., The Church, or The Smiths, you would do well to take a trip down the Flying Nun Records rabbit hole and spend the day obsessing over the amazing New Zealand bands they released throughout the 1980s.
