Song of the Day: August 31, 2024

Saturday is Lost Classics day, and today’s selection is the title track to the debut album by The Toy Dolls. They are a British punk band formed in 1979, but they were too silly to be taken seriously at the time, especially in comparison to bands such as The Sex Pistols, Wire, The Jam, and X-Ray Spex. However, while most of those bands either fell apart or matured their sound, The Toy Dolls stayed ridiculous punks for decades. For some strange reason that I can’t explain, I became aware of the band around the time that this debut was released, even though I had very little access to cool music at that time. I assume an older sibling of a friend taped the record for me, and I have been a fan of the album ever since. “Fiery Jack” was always a favorite of mine, but “Dig That Groove Baby” is the true gem of the record. Their strange cover of novelty tune “Nellie The Elephant” was actually a British hit, and every song is worth a listen if you want to have some fun bouncing around to punk riffs with occasionally ridiculous lyrics.
