Song of the Day: September 2, 2024

I have reviewed a lot of albums over the last few years while writing this blog. Most of them have been part of my Year In Review series. This series has focused on albums celebrating their 50th, 25th, and 10th anniversaries. I recently completed a list of my Top 20 albums from 1999 (25th anniversary), and I’m now going to move forward 15 years to 2014. For this year, I’m going to cover my Top 10 albums along with some other albums that I think deserve attention. I’ll start with number 10, The Endless River by Pink Floyd. For most people, their final studio album was forgettable, but for Pink Floyd fans it was an unexpected gift from a band who no longer existed. Culling material recorded by David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright before Wright’s death in 2008, Endless River is an ambient collection of songs culled from their 1994 Division Bell sessions along with some material recorded in the early 21st century. As such, it does not sound much like their earlier material but still employs some of their identifying sonic trademarks. “Louder Than Words” is the only track with vocals. The rest of the album is a series of multi-part instrumental pieces that focus as much on Wright’s keyboard and synthesizer expertise as on Gilmour’s guitar theatrics. I have been a huge Pink Floyd fan since the late ‘70s, and this is an album I still listen to more than The Final Cut or anything they released prior to 1971.
