King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: Cellophane
Continuing my focus on the Top 10 albums of 2014, coming in at #8 is I’m In Your Mind Fuzz by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard had already released five albums in a little over two years when they released this album in October 2014. This was the global debut for the band, after their first albums were only released in their home country of Australia, and marks the beginning of their ridiculously prolific run of great albums over the next five years. It is not one of their best of that period, but it shows them homing in on the conceptual album methodology that would define future records such as Quarters, Nonagon Infinity, and Flying Microtonal Banana. If you aren’t familiar with the band, this is as good a place as any to start a dive down the King Giz rabbit hole. They have since moved on from their psych-rock beginnings into realms including thrash metal and ambient electronics, so the albums in the 2014-19 conceptual psych-rock period now stand as the time when this band was the most adventurous group in the world, starting with this album.
