Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings: You’ll Be Lonely
It’s funky Friday! Continuing my focus on the music of 2014, Give The People What They Want by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is the best retro soul album of the year. The formula that Jones and the band follow for this release is the same as for all their recordings – old school soul, gut bucket funk, and plenty of homages to Stax Records, Muscle Shoals, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and the Memphis Horns. It’s funky Friday, so I’ve selected “You’ll Be Lonely,” but every song on this album satisfies if you are looking for that old school soul joint.
