Mitski: Francis Forever
Continuing my focus on the Top 10 albums of 2014, coming in at #5 is Bury Me At Makeout Creek by Mitski. This was the 3rd album for Mitski, but it was her first to show the compositional style that would soon define her sound. It isn’t as accomplished as her albums soon to come, but ten years later it holds up as a solid mix of indie-rock, post-grunge, and singer/songwriter soul-searching. Admittedly, when I listen to Mitski this is not the first album I turn to, but that says more about the quality of her later albums than about this one. This is a fine start to what has become an iconic career.
