Triptykon: Boleskin House

Continuing my focus on the music of 2014, Melana Chasmata by Triptykon is my favorite metal album of the year. This Swiss extreme metal band was formed in 2008 by Thomas Gabriel Fischer, founding member of metal icons Celtic Frost, and this was their second and last album (although they are currently working on a third release that is scheduled for a 2025 release). This album is a masterclass in extreme metal musicianship by one of the creators of the style. Every track provides a blending of the sounds that made the genre popular along with modern 21st century production. The end result is a unique album that still holds up as one of the best 21st century metal releases. It was hailed as the best metal album by dozens of metal critics in 2014, so who am I to disagree. It was my favorite of the year when it was released and it still holds up.
