Song of the Day: September 14, 2024

Saturday is Lost Classics day, and today’s selection is “Things We Never Did” by British post-punk band Sad Lovers and Giants. This track is from their 1982 debut album Epic Garden Music, a collection of songs that sound like many albums of the British post-punk, new wave, goth movement, but its 1982 release places it at the forefront of that movement. While the ‘80s found bands such as The Cure, The Church, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, and dozens of others celebrating world-wide fame by the end of the decade, Sad Lovers and Giants have been relegated to obscurity. First generation Goths are probably familiar with the band, but most have never heard of them. This is unfortunate, because the songs on this debut are one Goth banger after another. The guitar lines are quintessential, the bass provides that familiar new wave driving force, and the vocals are a perfect example of this style. The occasional saxophone places this firmly in the early ‘80s, but it is nice to hear those simple sax riffs that are now a lost art in the world of rock and pop music. I can’t explain why Psychedelic Furs were so successful and Sad Lovers and Giants were an afterthought throughout the ‘80s, but I still go back to this album when I am in the mood that only this kind of music can satisfy.

  1. Sadly, I’m one of those who never heard of them. It’s a shame because their genre of music is what I admire most about the 80s. When I get back to writing my Criminally Underrated series, I’ll have to include them. Thank you!
