Song of the Day: October 8, 2024

Continuing my focus on artists who died in 2024, today I present a song by The Greg Kihn Band. I have written a lot of posts for the Radio Faux Show, but I have never spotlighted Greg Kihn. This is surprising, because I am a huge fan of his music. The nine albums he released between 1976 and 1984 are some of the best power pop albums of the era. Other than Cheap Trick, The Greg Kihn Band are arguably the most successful power pop band that recorded during the late 70s/early 80s. They scored several iconic MTV hits, and one of the greatest Weird Al parodies (“I Lost On Jeopardy”) would not have been possible without them. While most people are only familiar with the band’s hits (“Jeopardy” and “The Breakup Song”), every Greg Kihn album is packed with one power pop banger after another. His songwriting moved easily from ballads to rockers to pop hits to anthems, and he always had a sense of fun in his compositions that is now sorely lacking in the rock of pop of the 21st century. Greg Kihn died on August 13, 2024. Rest in peace you modest rock and roll hero, and thanks for all of the great music.
