Paul Weller: Rise Up Singing
Concluding my week-long focus on the career of Paul Weller, today’s selection is from his 2024 album 66. This is his sixteenth studio album since going solo in 1989, and he is still as good as ever on the album’s 12 tracks. Turning 66 and still producing music that sounds current and relevant is a rare feat for most artists of Weller’s generation. The album starts with an early ’70s sounding soft rock balled (“Ship of Fools”) that provides some poetic advice about the meaning of life. Track two then kicks into a modern sounding song that continues the introspection. Ten more tunes flow easily from there, including the hard rocking “Jumble Queen” and “Soul Wandering,” the soulful “Nothing,” the heartfelt “My Best Friend’s Coat,” and the gorgeous “Rise Up Singing” and “I Woke Up.” By the time the album closes with the anthemic “Burn Out,” it is clear that this is a collection of songs that poured out of Weller like only a 50-year songwriting veteran is able to accomplish.
