Haircut 100: Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)
Saturday is lost classics day. In 1982, British new wave band Haircut 100 seemed to be the next big thing. Their debut album Pelican West Plus doesn’t have a weak track on it, but it is now largely forgotten because within another year the band’s lead singer Nick Heyward left the band. Their second album was a critical and commercial failure, so while bands like Madness, Culture Club, and Men At Work all have some of the best-known singles of the ‘80s, other than the occasional playing of “Love Plus One,” the songs of Haircut 100 are rarely heard in local grocery stores or shopping malls. This is a shame because their debut album is one grooving new wave banger after another. Most notably, album opener “Boy Meets Girl” is a funky jam with a rap-influenced closing, “Lemon Firebrigade” is a mid-tempo disco/funk instrumental deserving of extensive hip-hop sampling, and “Fantastic Day” is a wonderful new wave single that should have been a Billboard hit. Throw in the fact that saxophone is featured throughout the album, and this is a perfect example of the music of the time.
