Hoodoo Gurus: Tojo
Saturday is lost classics day. My introduction to Australian indie-rock band Hoodoo Gurus came in 1987 when I bought their third album Blow Your Cool off of the New Releases rack of my local college record store because I thought it looked interesting. Unlike many impulse buys of that time, this is still one of my favorite albums of the ’80s. After falling in love with that album, I bought the first two albums by the band and have loved all of them ever since. Stoneage Romeos is the band’s 1984 debut. Their sound was very similar on all of their early albums, and it all gets kicked off with an old school rock and roll jam on the first song of the album (“Let’s All Turn On”). They follow that up with pop perfection on “I Want You Back” before diving into some of their trademark dark humor on songs such as “Arthur,” “Death Ship,” and the hilarious pop-rock homage to necrophilia “Dig It Up.” The album is even stronger on side two which includes the tracks “Leilani,” “Tojo,” and “I Was A Kamikaze Pilot.” If you like catchy, hook-driven pop rock and don’t know the music of Hoodoo Gurus, you should search out their first three albums. This music always makes me happy.

Great band! My introduction to Hoodoo Gurus was “Bittersweet.” I’ve not heard “Tojo.” It’s blistering rock at its best–thank you!
