The Mothers of Invention: Hungry Freaks, Daddy
This is the next installment of my song of the day series in which I provide songs by an artist whose career spans over 40 years. This week’s artist is Frank Zappa. Although he recorded for a little less than 40 years due to his death at age 52 in 1993, I have selected him for reasons that will become obvious if you check out my Photo of the Day post later this afternoon. Zappa was born in Baltimore, MD and his traumatic childhood while living in the city was highly influential on his future music. Zappa was one of the most important and iconic rock and roll musicians of all time, blending rock, jazz, psychedelic, experimental, musique concrète, and free improvisatory music into an entirely unique compositional style. I’ve selected the song “Hungry Freaks, Daddy” from the groundbreaking 1966 double-album debut Freak Out! by his band The Mothers of Invention because the first song on his first album is a great place to start a journey into the works of Zappa. Very few artists have ever burst onto the music scene with a statement as unique, inventive, and identifiable as Zappa did with this album.
