Professor Longhair: Mardi Gras in New Orleans
It’s funky Friday! I’m going to put a little bit of funk history into today’s post by going back to what is considered one of the first funk recordings. Professor Longhair incorporated Afro-Cuban rhythms into his music as early as the 1940s. This recording of “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” was recorded in 1949. If you imagine this tune having the “on-the-1” funk drums that made James Brown the Godfather of Funk in the late ’60s, it is as funky as you can get.
