James White and The Blacks: Christmas With Satan
Saturday is lost classics day and this is a Holiday edition. Arguably the greatest Holiday music compilation of the New Wave period is the 1981 album A Christmas Record on the No Wave label ZE Records. This album is most important for being the original release of the modern holiday classic “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses, but it is filled with many other alternative gems. Two of the other best-known artists on the record are Was (Not Was) with their song “Christmas Time In Motor City” and Suicide with “Hey Lord,” but my favorite by far is the song “Christmas With Satan” by James White and The Blacks. Everything you need to know about the No Wave sound can be found in this track by one of the greatest No Wave bands. With lyrics like this, you know its got to be good.
There’s no angels or wise men
And certainly no virgins
This Christmas cannot be made white
By any known detergent
