Yannis & The Yaw with Tony Allen: Clementine

It’s funky Friday, so I’ll continue my Best of 2024 posts with Afrobeat inspired funk. Yannis & The Yaw is a side project for guitarist/vocalist Yannis Philippakis, founder of the indie rock band Foals. Philippakis wrote and recorded the songs on the group’s 2024 EP Lagos Paris London in 2016 when he went to Paris to record songs with drummer Tony Allen. Allen was the drummer for Fela Kuti and Africa 70 from 1968 to 1979 and one of the creators of Afrobeat music. Allen died four years ago before the project was completed, but Philippakis recently finished the existing material and released the recordings last summer. The recordings of Tony Allen in the ’70s are essential listening, so it is great that he was able to take part in these recording sessions before he died.
