Mary Halvorson: Collapsing Mouth
Sunday is jazz day! Continuing my focus on my favorite music of 2024, today’s tune is “Collapsing Mouth” from guitarist Mary Halvorson’s album Cloudward. The album was released almost a year ago, but has stayed on my list of favorite jazz recordings of 2024 since then. Recorded with Halvorson’s sextet Amaryllis, the rhythm section includes drums, bass, guitar and vibes and the only horns are a trumpet and trombone. There is also a guest appearance on violin by Laurie Anderson on track 6. This is modern jazz that showcases the ability of each player without any one of them demanding too much attention. It is gorgeous and mesmerizing.
