Song of the Day: January 12, 2025

Sunday is jazz day! Continuing my focus on my favorite music of 2024, today’s tune is “The Wounded Need To Be Replenished” from Shabaka Hutchings. Hutchings was a founding member of the British jazz-funk-Afrobeat band Sons of Kemet about 10 years ago, but his 2024 album Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace takes his sound in a new direction. Obvious influences include Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra, but Hutchings has also found a voice all his own with this release. This record is the culmination of decades of hard work by this musician who has now taken advantage of his connections and previous success to release an album that is as personal as music gets in the 21st century. This is jazz, but it is not jazz. It is 21st century post-jazz, combining multiple elements into one cohesive collection of contemplative tunes that demand thoughtful, concentrated listening. Solitude required.
