Lucifer.: At the Mortuary

I’ll conclude my Best of 2024 list with some old school heavy metal. The fifth album by Swedish band Lucifer is simply titled Lucifer V. The band is unapologetic in its old school riffage. They are deeply influenced by bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. This is retro heavy metal, pure and simple. German vocalist Johanna Sabonis reaches into the darkness for her lyrical inspiration, which fits perfectly with the band’s musical influences. Sabonis sounds like Ann Wilson of Heart – no growl vocals, no auto-tune, no frills. That is why I like it so much. Anyone who grew up to this music would do well to search this release out and play it on repeat.
