The Band: It Makes No Difference

Continuing my list of Top 20 albums from 1975, coming in at #18 is Northern Lights-Southern Cross by The Band. This is not the best album by The Band, but it is far from their worst. The songs “Ophelia,” “Acadian Driftwood,” and “It Makes No Difference” are three of the best they ever recorded, but it would only be about a year from this record’s release when Robbie Robertson started to coordinate the end of the band, even though the other members all wanted to continue. Listening to this album, there is nothing objectively occurring in their songwriting or recording that points to a group on the decline. As a huge fan of The Band, I would be overjoyed if they had recorded 5 more albums of the quality of this one during the last few years of the decade. As it is, fans have to return to this release as their last great album.

  1. “It Makes No Difference” is my favorite song by The Band–I cry almost every time Rick sings it in The Last Waltz (I have a friend who used to play with him in his much later years at Stephen Talkhouse in the Hamptons–he’s very proud of that, and I don’t blame him!). I love the band The Band. πŸ™‚

And I heard that Garth just died.

    1. Yes. Total coincidence that Garth died when I posted this but I’m glad I did because I also love this band. Especially Danko. And the two best moments of Last Waltz are this song and Danko singing Stagefright while alone under the spotlight.
That is amazing that your friend did that. Very nice.

      1. Thanks. Even if stressful, it feels good to be physically moving toward the next phase. Keeps me from spiraling about ‘world events’, at least occasionally. Glad to hear you’re hanging in okay.
