Keith Jarrett: The Köln Concert Part IIc
Continuing my focus on the music of 1975, today’s song is from my favorite jazz album of the year. 50 years later, and The Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett is still the best-selling solo album and jazz piano album in history, although this is much more than a jazz album. This is a transcendent piano performance by one of the instrument’s masters. Probably the most telling piece of evidence for the importance of this recording is that the Wikipedia photo for Jarrett is from 1975. He has had an incredible career as a leading figure in jazz, but he will always be connected to this release more than any other. Saying the name Keith Jarrett is synonymous with The Köln Concert, similar to how saying the name John Coltrane is synonymous with A Love Supreme and saying the name Miles Davis is synonymous with Kind of Blue. If you like music and have never listened to this album, you should grab your headphones and grant yourself an hour to fall into the trance that it creates. I have selected the fourth track of the album simply because it is only around 6-minutes in length, while the others are much longer, but the record should be listened to in its entirety. Gorgeous, astounding, mesmerizing, essential.
