War: Smile Happy

Sunday is jazz day. Continuing my focus on the music of 1975, today’s song is by War. They were best known for their R&B classics, such as “Cisco Kid,” “Low Rider,” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” but War were also an incredible jazz group. All of their albums include amazing soul, Latin, and funk fusion tunes that you would only know if you listen to the deep cuts. In 1975, they released their last great album (Why Can’t We Be Friends), which included two songs nominated for Grammy awards (the title track and “Low Rider”), but the album also contains a couple of great jazz tunes. “Leroy’s Latin Lament” is an amazing Latin jazz fusion tune and “Smile Happy” is soul jazz at its finest.
