Louis Prima: “Oh Marie”

Saturday is lost classics day and I’m going back to my favorite album of 1956. After a couple of decades of steady work and moderate success, Louis Prima reinvented himself in the mid-1950s with a sound that merged older big band swing and New Orleans jazz with the modern sounds of R&B, jump blues, and Rock and Roll. The result of this new sound was a band featuring young vocalist Keely Smith and a rocking group led by Sam Butera that was known as The Witnesses. Prima’s first album with this new sound was The Wildest!. It included several songs that are now classics, such as “Just A Gigolo” (the one that David Lee Roth unfortunately covered after he left Van Halen), “Oh Marie,” and the early rock and roll anthem “Jump, Jive, and Wail.” This is music to feed your soul.

  1. My father always had music playing when I was growing up–hence my passion for music. That said, Louis Prima/Keeley Smith were a staple in my formative years. They were a particular favorite of dad’s. Thank you once again for the cool, heartfelt memories, and thank you Dad. I hope there’s plenty of music where you are now and a keyboard/accordion for you to mess around on.
