Saturday is lost classics day and today’s selection was released 40 years ago. Robyn Hitchcock began his career as the leader of The Soft Boys, a late ’70s British post-punk band whose jangle pop influenced early American bands such as R.E.M. and The Replacements. After only two albums with the band, Hitchcock began a prolific solo career that has resulted in dozens of albums over the last 45 years. His fourth album, the first recorded as Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, was titled Fegmania! and released in 1985. All Hitchcock fans have their favorite releases, and there are certainly many classics from which to choose, but this one is my pick. Hitchcock’s witty lyricism and infectious melodies are present throughout the album’s 11 tracks of purely perfect indie pop. “My Wife and My Dead Wife” is the standout track, but “Egyptian Cream,” “I’m Only You,” “Goodnight I Say,” “The Man With the Lightbulb Head,” “Strawberry Mind,” and “Heaven” all rank among his best compositions.
