Everybody eats, so dig in to these dishes. It’s a pot luck of musical food.

Mangia!

Eat! Eat! No one leaves the table until everything is gone. That is how Ms. Faux’s and my Italian grandparents did Sunday dinner.

“Weird Al” Yankovic “Eat It”

Cooking Staples

Flour, sugar, butter, eggs, salt, oil, rice, pasta, beans, meat, liquid, heat – these are some of the basic staples of cooking. If you have these things then you are good to go in the kitchen.

If you are starting to learn how to cook, start with Jacques.

You can’t cook at home without a well-stocked pantry.

A Tribe Called Quest “Butter”

Arrested Development “Give A Man A Fish”

The B-52s “Quiche Lorraine”

The Grocery Store/Supermarket

The concept of a grocer, who sells dry goods, sugar, tea, coffee, etc. began in the 14th century. The first self-service grocery store was Piggly Wiggly, which opened in 1916 in Memphis, TN. The first shopping carts were provided in 1937 by Humpty Dumpty supermarkets in Oklahoma.

In case you don’t know how supermarkets work…

Before you apply to work at Wal-Mart, watch this…
The Food Lion chain were masters of the commercial in the ’80s and ’90s.

Fruits and Vegetables

Some of the first foods eaten by humans were fruits and vegetables. These were the original fast foods – all you had to was find them and eat them.

Always wash your fruits and vegetables before eating them.

Do you know the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?

Fast Food

Fast food accounts for over 570 billion dollars of global sales per year. It has been around since Roman times as street food. The first fish and chip shop in England is believed to have started in 1860, and by 1910 there were over 25 thousand shops across the UK. The first burger fast food restaurant was White Castle, opened in 1921. Apparently, fast food is not good for you, but almost everyone eats it.

“Has your mother ever made anything as good as a McDonald’s fry?…Have you ever eaten too many McDonald’s fries? Of course not, there’s never enough of them!”

Waiting too long in the drive thru; we’ve all thought – dammit, I could have parked and walked in by now!

Ribs, barbecue, fried chicken, slaw, cornbread, fried okra, mac & cheese: that’s soul food. Tteokbokki, jajangmyun, kimchi pancake: that Seoul food.

“Sister, could you please hook a brother up with a rusty bucket, full of fish heads, wrapped in razor wire?”

All good soul food requires a good cornbread.

The sandwich is named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. Montagu was an 18th century English aristocrat who ate sandwiches as a way to continue playing cards while he ate. The first sandwiches were eaten thousands of years ago, possibly in Babylon. Some of those sandwiches can still be found in government building vending machines throughout the U.S.
