Song of the Day: April 4, 2024

This cover of the classic David Bowie tune is exactly what you might expect, although there is a more old school R&B feel than on the original. I assume this is due to the presence of The News in the recording studio. I don’t know much about Umphrey’s McGee except that they have been making modern pop/rock music for the last couple of decades. Jeff Coffin is the beloved saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band and spent many years in Bela Fleck’s Flecktones. Huey Lewis & The News are one of the highest profile Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubs. I would normally ignore a one-off cover that features Jeff Coffin, but this song is a nice start to the Spring – familiar yet unexpected. If nothing else, it’s great to hear Lewis still belting them out.

  1. I enjoyed this cover so much that I’m on my third back-to-back listen! There’s a lot going on in this track, but everything is in its right place. Fantastic tones, production and mix. I was trying to place the decade and thought that this was perhaps recorded in the ’80s, so I was surprised to learn that it’s a recent release. Fun selection!
