Song of the Day: April 23, 2024

The Faux Family were recently having breakfast at a cool little cafe/record store when we saw an album on the wall that we didn’t recognize. It was released in 1980 by an all female rock band called The Orchids. It cost $5, so we bought it. A little research found that they featured the bassist from The Runaways (Laurie McCallister) and were produced by that band’s producer. I was going to select the tune “If Boys Got Pregnant” for today’s tune, but the streaming availability of the record is limited. However, you can check out that album on Spotify.

While researching the female rock band The Orchids, I ended up listening to a different band called The Orchids who I used to listen to 35 years ago. The Orchids are a Scottish indie rock band who were one of the primary artists on the Sarah Records label. They were a jangly, sophisto-pop band who released many 7″ singles and a few albums back in the late ’80s and early ’90s. “Something For The Longing” was always my favorite of their tunes. It has an infectiously catchy chorus and is a perfect example of the music Sarah Records was known for back during their brief existence. To learn the fascinating history of Sarah Records, check out the label’s Wikipedia page.
