Clifford Jordan: John Coltrane

Sunday is jazz day. This selection isn’t one of my Top 20 albums of 1974, but it is a great jazz album from that same year. By 1974, most new jazz releases were rapidly shifting away from the music of the ’50s and ’60s. However, there were still great records being released that continued the styles created during those decades. Clifford Jordan was an important tenor saxophonist in the heyday of hard bop and modal jazz, and his 1974 double album release Glass Bead Games is one of his best. It is a culmination of decades of Jordan’s playing. The tune “John Coltrane” is as good an ode to the legend as any ever written.
