Song of the Day: May 20, 2024

Continuing my list of the Top 20 albums of 1974, coming in at #8 is Kimono My House by Sparks. Here at the Faux Household, we joke that there are two kinds of people in the world – those who love Sparks and those who haven’t heard Sparks. With this album, brothers Ron and Russell Mael took their unique mix of glam and art rock and finally broke through to a fanbase that has stuck with them for 50 years. The music of Sparks is an acquired taste, but the fact that they are still going strong and as popular as ever in 2024 can not be ignored. They have evolved with the times over those 50 years, but the primary aspects of their music has never changed – incredible lyrics, infectious melodies, and amazing vocals. “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us” peaked at #2 on the British charts and is their first and biggest hit.

To learn more about Sparks, check out their website. If you don’t know them and like this song, it is worth searching out The Sparks Brothers documentary that Edgar Wright made in 2021.

      1. The record I reviewed is my favorite. If you want to try their disco period check out No. 1 Song In Heaven that they made with disco producer Giorgio Moroder. If you want to try some new wave check out Angst In My Pants. If you like all of those then you may be a fan ready to listen to their 23 other albums! LOL
