Whodini: Five Minutes of Funk
I’m going kick off the work week with some old school hip hop. Whodini were one of the first major rap acts. They are best known for the songs “Freaks Come Out At Night,” “Big Mouth,” and “Friends” from their 1984 album Escape. “Five Minutes of Funk” is the first track on that album. Rap like this was groundbreaking at the time, but now sounds extremely dated. Groups like Ice T, Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys were already preparing to make the music of Whodini sound old school before old school was even a thing, and Whodini were an afterthought within two years after the release of this album. Even so, it still works for nostalgic reasons for anyone who was listening to rap in the early ’80s.

That bass drum sound has the quality of a basketball bouncing off the gym floor.

Not saying that it’s poor quality, but that it’s tonally very similar (to my ears, anywhere).

That is the sound of the TR-808 drum machine. There’s nothing else like it!
