Yannis & The Yaw: Under the Strikes
Yannis & The Yaw is a side project for guitarist/vocalist Yannis Philippakis, founder of the indie rock band Foals. Philippakis wrote and recorded the songs on the group’s new EP in 2016 when he went to Paris to record songs with drummer Tony Allen. Allen was the drummer for Fela Kuti and Africa 70 from 1968 to 1979 and one of the creators of Afrobeat music. Allen died four years ago before the project was completed, but Philippakis recently finished the existing material and has started to release it. “Under the Strikes” is throwback Afrobeat with an indie rock edge.
