John Zorn: Mayim
Sunday is jazz day. Continuing my focus on the music of 1999, one of the most adventurous albums of that year was Taboo and Exile by John Zorn. Anyone unfamiliar with the work of Zorn over the last 45 years could start with this album and gain some perspective on his musical vision, but that could be said for any Zorn release. He is an avant-garde genius who has pushed the boundaries of jazz, classical, chamber, soundtrack, and instrumental music since the beginning of his career. This particular release contains a wide variety of songs, from percussive compositions such as “Koryojang” to free jazz excursions such as “Thaalapalassi” to experimental chamber music such as “Mayim” to all points in between. Most of Zorn’s releases sound like they could have been recorded far in the future or a thousand years ago, and this one is no exception.
