Julia Holter: These Morning
The new album Something In The Room She Moves by Julia Holter is a diverse collection of avant-garde art pop. Each song on Holter’s sixth album presents a different excursion into the avant-garde vein of pop songwriting. I always find an album like this best when listened to in its entirety because it is hard to grasp any one tune firmly, but as a whole there is a movement through the vision of the artist. Holter is a 21st century artist who works in the same realm that was once defined by artists such as Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, and Kate Bush. Music of this type has become much harder to find in the modern world of pop music than it was in the ’70s and ’80s. Thankfully, there are still some songwriters who thrive in this area of composition.
